Veterans Peer Support Group – 2nd Wed. of Month

Veterans Peer Support Group – 2nd Wed. of Month

On the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 11:00 AM at the Tasley Volunteer Fire Company, we invite Eastern Shore Veterans to a new peer-led support group. Facilitated by Jimmie Richardson (Peer Support Specialist, Hampton VA), this group was formed in partnership with the Community Partners of the Eastern Shore (CPES) Veteran Supports Committee and our three local American Legion posts.
Whether you’re adjusting to civilian life, seeking connection, or simply looking to share with others who’ve served—you’re welcome.

This is your space to talk, listen, support, and be supported.

Why It Matters

The transition to post-service life can bring hidden challenges—stress, isolation, identity shifts, and mental-health issues. For veterans, the risk of suicide remains significantly elevated:

  • According to the latest report from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), in 2022 there were 6,407 veteran suicides. That averages to about 17.6 Veterans per day. VA News
  • Research estimates that veterans are about 1.5 times more likely to die by suicide compared to non-veterans. PubMed
  • Younger veterans (ages 18-34) show markedly higher risk: in 2018 the rate was 45.9 per 100,000 for veterans in that age group vs. 16.5 for non-veterans. PubMed

These are stark figures—and they underscore the importance of connection, community, and support.

The Power of “Those Who’ve Been There”

One of the most effective ways to reduce isolation and build resilience is being around others who understand the unique experiences of service and transition. In a veteran peer-group:

  • You share with others who speak your language—military culture, deployments, transitions, challenges.
  • You gain safe space to be honest, without needing to explain from scratch.
  • You build camaraderie, accountability, and hope.
  • You break the silence that too often surrounds emotional struggle or unwanted thoughts.

When veterans gather this way, the message is powerful: You don’t have to go it alone.
